Dear Vi,
As I begin to write to you the first of many letters, I am both excited and pensive about all of the things I want to teach you. There are many people around you that see your great potential. You will learn so much in school and it has already been exciting to watch the incredible progress you are making and how your mind is opening. The importance of a good education is something we value and will continue to invest in. Throughout your time in school, you will have teachers who will guide you, push you, inspire you and help to develop the person you are meant to be. That is a parent’s job too. And so as you work on various subjects, we will continue to supplement your learning by developing your character and shaping your values. While it’s important to be smart, it’s equally important to be a good person. You have already heard me talk over and over again about honesty, integrity, hard work, kindness, gratitude, courage, independence, helping others, standing up for what is right and so many other things.
We hope that we can be your example of how to live a happy and fulfilling life. Here are some reminders (if needed).
Seek joy in everything you do.
Value relationships over things.
Remember that real friends will always want good things for you.
Be your best self and do not compare yourselves to others.
Stay true to who you are.
Be more forgiving and less judgmental.
Listen more than you talk.
Be someone who honors her commitments.
Work hard, but make time for fun.
Never give up. Never.
Live with gratitude and hope. Be thankful for what you have, while always striving for more.
Go out of your comfort zone and be willing to take some risks. Do not let fear hold you back.
Stay centered and have peace about who you are.
Respect yourself and others.
Learn how to take care of yourself.
Laugh (a lot).
You may not fully understand everything I wrote today since you are only eight years old, but someday you will. We have always talked to you in a manner that exceeds your age. That’s what’s fun and exciting–learning, growing, challenging yourself and getting better. Even adults need to keep working on ourselves.
I take the job of parenting very seriously and learn so many things from you too. You have already taught me so much and I want to continue watching and learning even more. I hope you will write me back so I can hear your thoughts and find ways I can support you more to become the amazing person you are meant to be.
You are a gift to this world and to all who know you. Stay joyful, sweet, keep singing and always have happiness in your heart.
With deep love and affection, xox
Mama
Dear mom,
I already have so so many questions and comments for you so here they are. I think you are doing a very good job at being a great mother and helping me learn. Thank you for working very hard so I get to go to my school. I hope we have many more of these conversations. I also have a few tips to be even better (if you even need them.)
Sometimes not be as serious from time to time.
Maybe sing more or tell a joke.
Relax.
Not work so much on the weekends.
Not doing every thing for every one else.
Explain why you said yes or no.
Xoxoxo, sincerely yours
Vivi
